D. Farnetti, who was active in 19th century Italy, painted this oil on canvas in 1896.

Little is known of the artist but painting elderly men playing musical instruments was a popular genre and old people enjoying life’s small pleasures was one of his favourite subjects.

This painting was donated in 1945 by William Hindle, a wholesale grocer of Blackburn, who retired to Lytham St Annes.
