The New Curate is an oil on canvas painted by Percy Robert Craft (1856-1934) but we don’t know who donated it to our collection. Any ideas?

Percy lived for a time in Newlyn with the artists’ colony and directed its dramatic society as he was also a talented actor and singer. Craft travelled widely and many of his paintings are of scenes from the Middle East.

This painting was conserved thanks to the kind donation from Peter Bretherton, a past President of the Lawn Tennis Association, born in New Longton, near Preston.

A lover of art he was particularly interested in the New Curate as it depicts a tennis scene.

During conservation of the painting it was found that some of the colours which had flaked off were from paints bought by Craft in the Middle East.
