What do you imagine is the story told by this painting? It is entitled ‘Goodbye’.
This oil on canvas was painted in 1892 by Arthur Cramer James Wasse (1854-1930).
Born in Manchester to an artistic father he studied at the Royal Academy and the Munich school of painting. He later lived in Rothenburg, Germany where there is a street named after him and a room in The Imperial City Museum devoted to his work.
This rather melancholic picture seeks to evoke an emotional response in the viewer.
Is she phrasing a farewell on paper?
To whom is she saying “Goodbye”?
Do the flowers on the floor hold any significance?
