This oil on canvas was one of two paintings by the artist, Charles W. Oswald donated in 1945 by Florence May Mather.
Little is known of this prolific artist who specialized in landscapes and rural scenes often featuring Highland cattle and working horses.
The 1891 census states his birthplace as Germany. Born in 1850, he lived in Everton, Liverpool and exhibited at The Walker Art Gallery.
