A Group of Figures in a Spanish Street.

This lovely watercolour was painted by the artist, Francis William Topham. He was born in Leeds in 1808 and died in Cordoba, Spain…. a place he often visited.

Apprenticed as an engineer, he was also to become a self taught watercolourist travelling widely, particularly to Wales, Ireland and Spain.

He first exhibited in 1832 and had seven of his paintings shown at the Royal Academy. He was a member of The New Society of Painters in Watercolours.

This painting is typical of his work as he produced many paintings depicting a country and its people. It was donated in 1955 by the artist’s great nephew, Samual Topham and his wife Helen.
