On the Thames at Greenwich

George Chambers Jnr. 1829 -1878 painted this oil on canvas in 1876.

George William Crawford Chambers was born in London to marine artist, George Chambers, and their work is sometimes confused. This painting is typical of the younger artist’s style which was freer and his attention to detail less vigorous than that of his father.

It was donated in 1939 by Alderman and Mrs J. H. Dawson.

Alderman James Herbert Dawson, J.P., FRSA had a lifelong love of art and donated over 50 works of art to the Collection and worked tirelessly to get an art gallery in the town – a dream which is still to be realised.
