A Lane Near Guildford
This lovely watercolour was painted by London born artist, Henry Charles Fox, RBA (1855-1929).
Entitled A Lane Near Guildford, 1912, it is typical of his work as he often painted scenes in Surrey, Berkshire and Kent trying to capture an idyllic countryside in his delicate landscapes. A popular and prolific artist he exhibited at the Royal Academy and other prestigious galleries.
Although his preferred medium was watercolour he did paint in oils, particularly rural scenes depicting farm animals and farm workers going about their daily lives.
There are three of his paintings in the LSA Art Collection. This was donated in 1955 by Margaret Jessie Gourlay (1871-1957) of St David’s Road South, Lytham St Annes.
