‘On The Lookout’
This watercolour was painted by Henry Meynell Rheam (1859-1920).
Born in Birkenhead, he studied in London and Paris. For a time he was a member of the Newlyn colony of artists which specialised in landscape painting ‘en plein air’ as the climate was ideal for working out of doors, the strong, natural light ideal and the subject matter plentiful.
This large canvas depicts a typical Cornish harbour scene and Rheam’s early works strongly reflect the life of the local fishing community.
