The Thread of Life
This oil on canvas was painted in 1889 by Prestwich, Manchester born artist, Jack (John) Leigh Wardleworth (1863-1925). His sister, Ada, was also an artist and lived with him even on his marriage.
History and literature often provided his subject matter.
This painting depicts the Three Fates from Greek mythology. Clotho, the young maiden, spins the thread of life: Lachesis, the mature woman, measures the length of life and the elderly Atropos cuts the thread with her shears to end a life.
Alderman J.H. Dawson donated the painting in 1939, just one of the many he gave to the Collection.
