Rue St. Etienne, Rouen is a watercolour and gouache painting signed and dated in 1855 by the artist John Skinner Prout (1804-1876).

The Plymouth artist emigrated to Australia in 1840 with his wife and seven children hoping for a better life. There he travelled extensively sketching and painting rural scenes and publishing his own lithographs.

Life was still hard so he returned to England in 1848 but often travelled to the Continent to paint and many of the sketches and watercolours he produced are still popular at auctions today.
