Startled Deer is an oil painted in 1855/6 by renowned artist, Richard Ansdell (1815-1885) who had an area in Lytham St Annes named after him as he had lived and worked in the area.
He also resided in the Scottish Highlands where the painting of deer was a favourite subject. It was only recently, when this large oil painting was cleaned and restored, that a signature was revealed.
Donated in 1936, it is just one of many generous donations made to the Collection by Alderman and Mrs J H Dawson.
