Richard Ansdell RA was a prolific artist who painted a wide variety of sporting, animal and narrative subjects.

In 1856 he and John Phillip RA travelled to Spain producing many pictures which they sent home by boat. Ansdell returned home alone the following year producing many scenes of southern Spain.

This oil on canvas was probably done in his London studio from sketches he had made on his travels.

It was donated in 1947 by Alderman and Mrs J.H. Dawson, one of many works of art they gave to the Collection.
