Seeing the recent Lytham Hall post showing the preparations for a wedding reminded us of this charming picture, that we refer to as The Village Wedding.
However, we now know that originally it was entitled “The Young Squire’s Wedding: receiving the congratulations of his tenants, a scene of the Olden Time”.
It is an oil on canvas, painted in 1845 by Liverpool born artist, Thomas Falcon Marshall (1818-1878). A member of the Liverpool Academy he was a prolific painter of cottage interiors, rustic and historical scenes as well as portraits.
Donated in 1946 by Sarah Ellen Crompton (1860-1949) who at that time lived at 25 Ansdell Rd North. Lytham St Annes.
