The subject of this oil painting, William John Porritt (1828-1896), was born in Ramsbotttom to one of the most respected business families of Helmshore.

An investor in The St. Annes Building Company he helped to create the seaside town we know today. Some of the new houses were built from stone from the Porritt quarries at Helmshore. Porritt served as Chairman on the St. Annes Board of Health from 1891-1894.

The artist, London born, Caroline Alice Millington, (1853-1935), eventually settled in St Annes where she painted local dignitaries. She is buried in St Cuthbert’s Church, Lytham.
